Government
This course will include government institutions and political processes, and their historical impact on American society. Content will include, but is not limited to, the functions and purpose of government, the function of the state, the constitutional framework, federalism, separation of powers, functions of the three branches of government at the local, state, and national level, and the political decision-making process. Students will also explore current events by critically assessing civil liberties and civil rights controversies, and consider how the government has sought to achieve balance between the needs of the society and the rights of individuals.
ECONOMICS
This course will introduce basic microeconomic and macroeconomic principles, as well as current issues related to the American economy. We will also analyze components of personal finance and financial literacy. Students will examine the role of the government in the economy and the global economy. At the conclusion of this course you should be able to watch the evening news or pick up the News Journal and understand most of the economic concepts being discussed, as well as competently and confidently discuss the stories contained within.
